Whitman has completely changed momentum for the football program in a very short span. While I doubt he studied the basketball program from afar with as much aplomb, I believe his sincerity in wanting this job for a long time and it's likely he has plenty of goals in this domain. I don't think any of his goals relate to the current state of the program, but rather pragmatic and fiscal determinations.
He has not backed the staff at any point, but rather insists upon saying he will try to offer as much support as he can to his coaches. I think after this weekend it's very likely there will be some staff adjustments, and reading more things about Lovie, I like the idea of a stern teacher.
Brad and Doug have previously mentioned that there is a lot of positive support mojo on this staff. Groce started out rah-rah and can't now reverse position and suddenly be the hard-ass any team needs (and it's not in him). That's why he has an energy mantra. Weber had McClain, but Weber wasn't a rah-rah guy either, so Jerrance was the closest in that regard (and he seemed to be going in a different direction too often).
I think it's unlikely Groce can get it done, but imo a small chance remains if he can get a veteran x&o guy from the tough-love department into his number 2 position. If Groce tries to change his style I think that's foolhardy and he'll lose trust with the players.
Who is that guy? Curious if you agree with the premise and if so, who might fit that description?
